John Shaffer is a senior shareholder of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP in Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Shaffer attended Stanford University where he received his A.B. with honors and distinction in 1986. He received his J.D. degree from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California in 1989, where he served as Book Review Editor for the California Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif. Following law school, Mr. Shaffer served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Alex Kozinski, U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, from 1989 to 1990, and as Law Clerk to the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy, Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court from 1990 to 1991.
The National Bankruptcy Conference invited Mr. Shaffer to become a member in 2005. In addition, Mr. Shaffer has served as a member of the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure from 2000 through 2006, and he currently serves on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Advisory Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure. He has served as President of the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum and a member of the Board of Governors of the Financial Lawyers Conference.
Mr. Shaffer is a frequent speaker on bankruptcy-related topics, including for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, the California Bankruptcy Forum, the Norton Institutes on Bankruptcy, and the American Law Institute – American Bar Association.
